It's December! That means for most of us, a lot of cold days best spent indoors coding.
The challenge this month is to start an open source project here at BEA's CodeShare. The process is simple, just fill out the project request form to start the process.
What kind of projects are we looking for? Everything! But there are certain projects that are going to be popular. For instance, Eclipse plugins are hot! Did you know that most searched google keywords in CodeShare are related to Eclipse Plugins? That's right, want to be popular, just start a plugin project that does something interesting.
Imagine the kind of plugins you can create with very little work. How about integrating MBean monitors into Eclipse? Make your IDE your application dashboard so that you can monitor your server while you code or even your JRocket JVM. Why not use JMX and MBeans to create an Eclipse plugin?
There are many other plugins that are simple and easy. How about plugins that keep track of your time working on specific classes or methods? Why not integrate code sharing or even build an eXtreme programming Pair Programming interface. It's up to you and your imagination. Just think of what would be cool or would save you time or effort down the line.
What code do you have laying around on your hard disk. Got a nice utility? Why not release it to open source? Same goes for whole applications or even libraries that you have written. If it shows something cool, saves a little time, solves a problem the community could benefit.
The mission of BEA's CodeShare is programmer productivity and value. Almost any project you might imagine could meet this measure. Remember that your applications, even when using BEA products, can still benefit from tools like plugins, debuggers, monitors or interface with Spring, Tomcat, and many other open source tools.
Don't want to bother with maintaining an open source project? Please consider submitting your code to CodeSamples where we maintain a wealth of useful and informative chunks of code.
Don't stop at code samples. Think about your Ant, shell and WLST scipts too. Scripting through the WebLogic Scripting Tool (WLST) is hot, so either dig around for what you have or get creative. Either way, a good script is worth having and sharing. Shell scripts and Ant snippets are also sometimes overlooked, but also great assets for developers. Code is code and if it is useful, share it.
Don't forget that employers are looking for open source on your resume now, so don't forget that this is more than a bit of fun, it is good for your career. But your resume is just one of the benefits of participating in open source. This month we are giving away T-Shirts for each code sample and project that is approved. Just follow the instructions from the links below to get started.
Remember: Open Source, it's good for you, good for the community, and good for your resume.
Here are two of the T-Shirts in all their glory.
