The CodeShare community is all about creating code which other developers can use. For most of us getting something working quickly is a way to break the ice on a design. Looking at others' work enables us learn from their experience. We like to work by example.

By some estimates, there may be between 3 and 5 billion lines of code on the Web. The problem is finding exactly what is needed along with the context to understand it. One solution is to use sites like the CodeShare community, where code samples and projects reside together in an organized way. The other is to use tools that intelligently search the Web.

While there are a number of code search engines available (Google Code Search and Koders come to mind), one of the best is Krugle. In 2005 Ken Krugler was working on Chandler, a part of Mitch Kapur's open source application foundation, when he realized that he was having trouble finding developer information. He started thinking about what the ideal search tool would look like. The result is the Krugle code search engine.

Krugle's strength is that it goes beyond just finding code snippets to analyzing the code itself. It recognizes the results of a search as a function call, as a class definition or as a code comment, and it returns only the results which are relevant. What's the benefit? The user can easily follow an element in the code back to the data structure of the class where the element is defined. Equally important, Krugle assembles project level metadata such as project descriptions, licensing information and the language utilized. This allows easy access to code by author, project, license, or other parameters. Krugle is unique in the degree to which it incorporates metadata to refine searches.

By an arrangement between Krugle, CollabNet and Dev2Dev, CodeShare has joined the elite club of large developer networks that Krugle supports. Open source sites such as IBM developerWorks, Sun's java.net, SourceForge.net, Amazon Web Services and Yahoo! Developer Network all have dedicated feeds updating Krugle's databases with their latest code. Now CodeShare does as well, and code samples and projects submitted to the feed will be quickly made available for developers everywhere.

Take advantage of Krugle's support of CodeShare by submitting your projects and code samples. You can learn more about contributing Dev2Dev code samples and projects to Krugle by going to the CodeShare Code submission portal.

The most recent submission to CodeShare comes from Applebee's International. Adam Zabel, Senior Software Engineer for Applebee's International, has contributed a code sample to CodeShare to help you use .NET controls for publish/subscribe panels. The purpose of this code sample was not only to allow you to do this with .NET controls but also to reduce, and sometimes eliminate, the code behind the controls which handle the inter-portal communication. Here is how it works:

"Analyzes controls placed in the publish container and automatically assigns a portlet session variable to it. An appropriate control (either implicit or explicit) causes an event to be raised. Another container (SubscribePanel) receives the raised event and maps session variables to SessionValue (based on HiddenField) controls. Options for inline refresh and postback are provided, allowing the user to bind to the SessionValue control."

Apache Beehive is an excellent J2EE framework intended on making J2EE applications easier to develop. WebLogic Workshop has some excellent Beehive support and thanks to BEA Senior Systems Engineer James Bayer, you now have two code samples to help showcase Workshop's Beehive support.

The big idea behind these code samples was to take the Beehive Petstore example and convert it from a standard Ant-based project to a Workshop project. This conversion makes using Workshop to play around with the Petstore easier. Since these code samples make it so you can use Workshop to run, debug and play around with the Beehive Petstore example, you now have access to Workshop's plugins for developing Beehive applications. Here are just a few examples of what the Workshop plugins provide for Beehive applications:

Visual editing and viewing of page flows

Design palettes for NetUI tag development in JSPs

Controls annotation tooling

The Beehive Petstore example makes it easy to experiment with Beehive development and the Workshop tooling around them thanks to this project being a fully-functioning project. This means you do not have to learn new tooling while writing a new application. Below is the information about the new code samples:

One of the biggest problems with project management on CodeShare has been with the complexity for updating the web content for your project. The new CodeShare upgrade remedies this and more. Read on for more details.

CodeShare is host to many projects. Open source projects and user groups encompass the majority of the projects on CodeShare and there has always been a common problem expressed with content management on CodeShare. This problem is that it is too complex. It shouldn't be necessary to be fluent in CSS, HTML and Subversion just to have a usable homepage that a project's users can benefit from. Thanks to the recent CodeShare upgrade, this problem is a thing of the past.

CodeShare was successfully upgrade on February 16th and with this upgrade comes new functionality to help solve the problem above. Most notable is the new wiki-like modification of project web content. The wiki-like modification of your web content is now provided via an embedded "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) editor. Now you can modify your web content via your browser just like you would do using any good WYSIWYG editor on your local computer. Gone are the days where you have to checkout your project using Subversion just to update your project homepage. There is no need to use any external project tools to update your content. Now you have a simple way to update your project homepage and any other web content within your project workspace. To learn how to do this, view the How do I modify a project's web content? documentation.

I am planning on presenting this feature and more in an upcoming webinar. I will provide you with the webinar details when they have been fleshed out. Until then, feel free to browse the release notes for the new version of CodeShare's hosting software, CollabNet Enterprise Edition.

There
has been a lot happening over the last two weeks on CodeShare.
We have had one new project submitted and two new code
samples. Outside of the community submissions, CodeShare has
also started the process of upgrading our core software. We
will not get too deep into the features, as we will discuss this closer
to the upgrade time, but you can expect the following:

Project Templates - These are easier to create and maintain
templates that new projects will use.

Wiki-like Content Management - There will be a WYSIWYG
editor for all of your managed HTML content.

As I mentioned, we will discuss this further closed to the end
of January. Let's see what the community has provided by
means of new code samples and projects. As always,
if
you have any questions about submitting a new project or code sample,

New Projects

WebLogic Portal has been given Dojo AJAX integration thanks to the
new dojoportal92 project on CodeShare. The idea is to provide
simple-to-implement AJAX components and functionality into WebLogic
Portal applications. dojoportal92 has source code and examples of
how this can be done. The following is the information about the
dojoportal92 project and it's owner:

New Projects

While only one project was created in the last 2 weeks, it
solves a very big problem of dealing with large XML documents:

keep from getting a OutOfMemoryError when processing.

The above has been your update to CodeShare's new code sample
and project offerings for the last two weeks. Keep the
submissions coming and if you have any suggestions on how to better
promote code samples and projects, let us know.
