Membership in the BEA Developers and Architects group on Oracle Mix has reached 200. The group, which was started by Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Senior Director and Editor-in-Chief Justin Kestelyn, is "the official source of information about the bringing together of the dev2dev/arch2arch and OTN communities."

In late May, I interviewed Justin and Bob Rhubart, asking them questions about the transition of the Dev2Dev and Arch2Arch sites over to the OTN. That interview, which is now available as a podcast, includes discussion of the BEA Developers and Architects Mix group, along with other information about the transition progress and plans.

Among the hot topics in the group is an ongoing discussion titled "Product roadmap after the BEA acquisition". The plan, says Justin Kestelyn, is to "have this roadmap earlier rather than later. Obviously it is the key requirement for successful migration."

Some of the uncertainty is sure to be resolved on July 1, when Oracle President Charles Phillips and Oracle Senior Vice President Thomas Kurian present the BEA Welcome and Middleware Strategy Briefing Webcast.

I'm really excited about what's happening on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). Since OTN Editor-in-Chief Justin Kestelyn wrote his blog Sunrise: The BEA and Oracle Developer Communities Come Together and set up the BEA Developers & Architects group (login required) on Oracle Mix, a lot of BEA people have taken advantage of the opportunity to find out more about what's ahead, now that BEA is a part of Oracle.

From my own independent perspective (i.e., I'm just saying this on my own based on being in the industry for multiple decades), I see a lot of advantages in the confluence of the BEA and Oracle communities. I have worked on projects involving very large real-time data volumes for a long time. In the 2000 period, I recommended to my company that we utilize WebLogic as the basis for our proposed high-volume online business data archive and retrieval system.

On another project a couple years later, when database technology was needed as a back-end for a high-volume satellite data analysis center, my advice was to go with Oracle. That satellite has just launched, and despite the data load exceeding our original estimates by quite a lot, our Oracle database has handled everything without a glitch. We're now preparing to create a new Oracle-based data center for future environmental data measurement and analysis projects.

Where reliability and scalability are required, BEA and Oracle technologies have an incredibly enviable reputation. To me, the fusion of the two appears an ideal match.

This week's Dev2Dev Blogs offer a particularly rich assortment of posts, including James Bayer's Using X.509 Certificates for Identity Propagation with Web Service Security and Gilbert Pilz's Replay Reconsidered (about WS-Reliable Messaging). See the Blogs section below for descriptions of these posts and a few of my other favorites from the past week.

Also of note: we are putting the finishing touches on the content for the third annual Dev2Dev Reader Survey. The survey provides the Dev2Dev community with an opportunity to help improve the Dev2Dev site. The survey includes muliple choice questions, along with a few questions where you can enter text responses. Based on the results (which will be posted after the survey is complete), we'll try to address the areas where people believe the site could be improved, and further extend the areas that people find most informative and useful.

See the Results from the 2006 Dev2Dev Reader Survey for an idea of the kinds of question that will be in the survey. We won't be changing too much in the new survey, but it will be updated a bit to reflect today's technology environment.

The survey will run for about two months. After we collate and post the results, you'll be able to add your own further commentary about the survey and the results.

Last week, we announced that CodeShare now offers the capability for submitted code to be indexed and made searchable by Krugle, the code search engine. The integration of capability for having code in CodeShare indexed and searchable within Krugle provides significant advantages for developers. Your code instantly gains visibility and prominence. If you choose to submit your CodeShare code to Krugle, your code will be joining code from major sources such as IBM's DeveloperWorks, Java.net, SourceForge.net, and the Yahoo! Developer Network -- code from all of these sites is included in Krugle's code database.

For details, see the announcement article and Jim Wright's blog on submitting CodeShare code to Krugle. Gilbert Pilz talks about WS-ReliableMessaging in his Replay Reconsidered post. WS-ReliableMessaging is an OASIS specification that describes a protocol that allows SOAP messages to be delivered reliably between distributed applications in the presence of software component, system, or network failures.

I have two important bits of news to talk about right away in this post. First, CodeShare now offers the capability for submitted code to be indexed and made searchable by Krugle, the code search engine. For details, see the announcement article and Jim Wright's new blog on submitting CodeShare code to Krugle. I'll talk more about CodeShare and Krugle in the CodeShare section below.

The second major news item is the publication of the new WebLogic Platform 10.2 Evaluation Guide, which is now available for your perusal and investigation. The evaluation guide provides a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to the WebLogic Platform 10.2. The guide is divided into three chapters:

Chapter 1: Application Development Solutions

Chapter 2: Integration Solutions

Chapter 3: Portal Solutions

and also includes a "Spotlight on Adobe Flex." The guide walks you through a realistic project involving the mythical company Avitek, Inc., "a major consumer electronics firm that requires an enhancement to their order management system." The existing system reflects the company's status as having been a major player in the industry for a very long time: it's a mishmash of proprietary, often home-grown systems that were developed at different times using different technologies, lacking clean interfaces to enable access to and coordination between the subsystems, etc. I think you know what I'm talking about!

I had an introduction to Avitek's technology when I attended the Boston Dev2Dev TechDay a few weeks ago. Indeed, it reminded me of things I've seen at many companies I worked for over a couple decades of software consulting.

Anyway, the Platform 10.2 Evaluation Guide provides a thorough introduction (596 pages long), chock-full of code snippets, screen shots, and step-by-step instructions on how the WebLogic Platform was applied by the development team to rescue poor Avitek from its unenviable situation.

Hi. As I mentioned in my first personal post a couple days ago, I am taking over for your long-time Dev2Dev editor-in-chief Jon Mountjoy, who is moving on to new employment. The transition has been a little hectic, hence this first official Dev2Dev Editor's blog from me is a day late.

I'm excited to be able to participate in the Dev2Dev community, and look forward to a long and fruitful engagement. A bit about my background: I've been developing software for a very long time, starting in my high school in the early 1970s, where I had the opportunity to write programs using the language APL over a teletype terminal that was connected to an IBM 360 at a nearby university. My programs were stored on paper tape! I can still remember taking carefully rolled coils of yellow paper tape back and forth between home and school...

My interest in computer technology and software development remained and grew into a professional career that has included quite a few different platforms and technologies. In the 1998-2003 period I did a lot of work in Java (both software development and technical review of books), and I also worked on a partnership between my company and BEA, where we would have used WebLogic as the basis of an online document archive and bill payment system. Unfortunately, changing business conditions prevented that project from fully taking off... Take a look at my introductory post if you'd like further details on my background.

Now, a quick summary of recent Dev2Dev happenings.

First, an announcement: the Workshop Team's Bi-Annual Framework Survey is now underway. As Chris Nguyen reports, the purpose of this survey is to "gauge the most popular frameworks in the Java community." There are other benefits, too: all participants are entered into a free drawing for a $100 Amazon.com gift certificate and a free discount for purchasing Workshop Studio.

Thursday afternoon I attended an interesting EclipseCon session on the Eclipse Communications Framework (ECF).

Scott Lewis from BEA and Markus Kuppe from Versant led the session and Ted Kubaska participated remotely from Portland to help demo the framework.

Scott began the session by introducing the need for the Eclipse Communications Framework. He argued that teams, especially open source teams but even teams within many large organizations, are changing in a number of ways:

Team membership is distributed - there is often a need to work with others over long distances and multiple time zones.

Teams are often cross-organizational and multi-organizational

Team members have more diverse skills, backgrounds and cultures

Project organization is becoming flatter, there are more volunteers and members have more control (ECF itself is an example of this - it is a voluntary project not supported by any one company)

The expectations of your community or the users of your project are also changing:

Project planning is expected to be more open - again this is especially true in open source but is often true of proprietary software as well. Customers want to know the roadmap of the projects they use.

Customers have high expectations for responsiveness - to contributors, to bug reports, suggestions from end users. Customers expect a communications channel such as a newsgroup, mailing list or forum.

The result of all this change is that the technology teams require is also changing. According to Scott the technology needed for today's teams is:

Interoperability: multiple protocols, multiple clients, multiple services

Integration

Extensibility

Therefore the goal of the Eclipse Communication Framework is to lower barriers to team and community communication (for Eclipse) by providing an Interoperable, Integrated, Extensible Framework.

Scott and Ted (remote from Portland) then went on to demo how the framework is integrated with Eclipse so team members can collaborate with each other as they develop. An IRC client was displayed within Eclipse so Scott and Ted could chat with each other. Scott showed how he could share bugs by copying and pasting the bug # into IRC. Shared Editor (over XMTP) automatically took the bug # and converted it to a URL that Ted could use to pull up the bug. Shared Editor also lets you share classes. You can see the other person typing and editing the code and they can navigate you to the particular method/section of their code that they want you to view.

You can also share screen captures easily with others and talk to team members over Skype or chat via IM. You buddy lists from many clients can be displayed within Eclipse. File transfer capabilities are also available.

They've done a lot of work to allow team members to collaborate more easily and be more productive when they are working in today's distributed team environment.

If you're interested in finding out more about ECF and how it works I've uploaded the session slides which covers ECF in more detail.

After spending the morning laughing throughout Dan Lyons (aka Fake Steve Jobs) humorous morning keynote I attended Walter Harley's packed session on Java Annotations. Walter shared with an attentive audience common use cases for annotations and how to declare and use annotations.

Here are a few rough notes from the session. You may download the complete slide presentation for more details.

Download Session Slides (PDF, 1MB)

Session Notes

Java annotations are human-readable and machine-readable metadata about methods, classes or variables.

Main goal for annotations was to auto-generate J2EE boilerplate code from metadata. They also improve communication between the developer and the compiler, for optimization and error-checking.

Programming in JavaDoc is unchecked and syntactically limited. Annotations provide a solution.

There are different use cases for annotations throughout the development process of EDIT, COMPILE, DEPLOY, CLASSLOAD AND RUNTIME:

EDIT: Annotations can be fancy, standardized comments. For example,
@Deprecated
, versus
/* don't use this anymore */

Annotations are harder to mis-spell, easier to search, less ambiguous, and the compiler enforces your consistency

COMPILE: Built-in support in the IDE allows you to express constraints that aren't possible with just the Java language. For example, semantic error checking such as only one method in an EntityBean should be a primary key.

DEPLOY and CLASSLOAD: Can modify existing class - which APT doesn't let you do. For example,
@TransactionAttribute(REQUIRED)
inserts transaction locking code
around calls that need to be atomic

RUNTIME: Reflection at runtime

One of our Dev2Dev bloggers, Konstantin Komissarchik gave an excellent tutorial on the Faceted Project Framework this morning at EclipseCon in Santa Clara.

Konstantin compared Facets to the configuration options you often have when installing software via a wizard. In the same way, the Faceted Project Framework provides a way for Eclipse plugin developers to split their project into separate units of functionality and give their users the option of installing the units that they want.

The framework makes good use of versioning. When you setup a facet you are required to assign it a version and all actions (what the user can do) and constraints (dependencies and conflicts) are declared per version. Konstantin made a good point that often uninstall and version change actions are neglected by developers due to time constraints but these are very important for a positive user experience.

I've uploaded the tutorial slides for you to view at your leisure. They are straighforward and thorough and include the tutorial exercises and solutions. Enjoy!

Besides the great articles below, the big news is Dev2Dev TechDays. These are half day developer focused seminars that provide a guide for building SOA in Java, and we'll be running them all across the Americas from Mexico City to Toronto via San Diego and more :-) I'll have some dates for Asia at a later date. Some of the topics include: Developing POJO components, Extending POJO components into Java Web Services, Using Eclipse to Proxy enable Java Web Services, and Connecting a Flex UI to the back-end SOA. Registration is open!

Finally, we've made a number of changes to Arch2Arch as I outlined on my blog there. As a result of all the architect-focussed material we've been publishing (virtualization, integration, governance, reference architect etc.), I hope to remove some of the architect articles that keep appearing on our Dev2Dev article feed. We are, after all, about developers here! In the future, if you want architect-related material, please go over to Arch2Arch and subscribe there. Thanks!
