EclipseCon 2008

This will be my fourth EclipseCon and third time that I will be there as a speaker. Time sure does fly fast. It wasn't so long ago that I was new to Eclipse trying to understand the "yet another Java widget API" known as SWT. Despite being to EclipseCon so many times already, I continue looking forward to going there every year. Eclipse is growing so fast that there are always new things to learn about. Not to mention that as an Eclipse committer, EclipseCon is my once in a year opportunity to see in person other committers that I work with throughout the year. Instant messaging is no substitute for a design discussion over a pint at the hotel bar. :)

EclipseCon can also be an interesting opportunity for current or future BEA customers. The BEA booth is supposed to be excellent this year, with many product demos going on at various times. Plus you never know who you will run into. You know that feature that you really love (or hate)? You can run into the person who brought it to you. How cool is that?

There are tons of interesting sessions and events happening at EclipseCon 2008. Early registration deadline is Feb 14th. Register now. I hope to run into more BEA customers at this year's event.

WebLogic Server Tools 1.1.2 Released

Posted by kosta on January 29, 2008 at 1:11 PM | Permalink | Comments (2)

A new year and a new release. This is another service release that fixes a number of important bugs. We recommend that all current users migrate to this release by using the Eclipse update manager. More information about this release can be found in the release notes.

The Eclipse 3.4 "Ganymede" version of WebLogic Server Tools has also been updated. Version 2.0.1 is now available and has been tested with Ganymede M4 milestone build. Of course, since Ganymede platform is still under development we don't recommend this version for most users, but early adopters with tolerance for pre-release stability can get a sneak peak of what's coming in the next Eclipse release.

WebLogic Server Tools 1.1.1 Released

WebLogic Server Tools team has just put finishing touches on another release. This is mainly a service release that fixes a number of important bugs. We recommend that all current users migrate to this release by using the Eclipse update manager. More information about this release can be found in the release notes.

On a related note, we now have support for Eclipse 3.4 "Ganymede" platform which is currently under development. This is accomplished via a separate version of WebLogic Server Tools that's released in parallel with the existing Eclipse 3.3 "Europa" version. So version 2.0 of WLS Tools is the 1.1.1 equivalent for Ganymede. Since Ganymede platform is still under development we don't recommend this version for most users, but early adopters with tolerance for pre-release stability can get a sneak peak of what's coming in the next Eclipse release.

WebLogic Server Tools 1.1 Released

Posted by kosta on October 1, 2007 at 10:13 AM | Permalink | Comments (6)

We are happy to announce the 1.1 release of WebLogic Server Tools for Eclipse 3.3. This release contains two major new features as well as 28 bug fixes and enhancements. One of these new features is a direct result of community input. Thanks for helping us make WLS Tools a better product and we hope that you will give the 1.1 release try.

Key New Features

  1. Integration with Eclipse Web Tools Platform's Java EE 5 tooling.
  2. Support for the upcoming WebLogic Server 10.3 Tech Preview release.

Download and Additional Information

Existing WebLogic Server Tools users can use the Eclipse update site mechanism to search for updates (see the end of this message for important configuration details). New users can use the following URL to learn more and to get started.

https://dev2devclub.bea.com/updates/eclipse-3.3/wls-plugins/

The release notes document contains additional information on the new features and lists the bugs that have been fixed:

https://dev2devclub.bea.com/updates/eclipse-3.3/wls-plugins/release-notes/v1.1.html

As always, if you run into problems, do not hesitate to post questions on the newsgroup or to open a bug report at http://bugzilla.bea.com.

Configuring Eclipse to Detect WLS Tools 1.1 Update

If you are an existing user of WLS Tools 1.0 or 1.0.1 and you try to search for updates, WLS Tools 1.1 may not be picked up as an update based on your Eclipse configuration. Check the following preference (Window->Preferences) to make sure that the highlighted option is selected and then try to search for update again.

Seeking User Feedback on Future Direction for WebLogic Server Tools

Posted by kosta on September 27, 2007 at 11:37 AM | Permalink | Comments (3)

As we are putting final touches on the 1.1 release of WebLogic Server Tools for Eclipse and are starting to plan for the next couple of releases, I thought it would be useful to get some user feedback about where you (our users) would like to see WebLogic Server Tools go.

  1. Are there features that you would really like to see added to WebLogic Server Tools? Please be specific.
  2. Here are some of the features that we are considering. Would you find these useful? If so, please indicate which ones. Of the ones you select, please rank them in the order of importance to you.
    1. Graphical editor for WebLogic-specific deployment descriptors (weblogic.xml and weblogic-application.xml). This would probably take the form of a multi-page editor with form elements for various parts of those descriptors.
    2. Support for authoring of WebLogic Shared J2EE Libraries (also known as Library Modules). Basically, the ability to work an a project containing the source for the library at the same time as the project that's consuming the library without having to constantly export the library archive.
    3. Support for deploying and running apps on remote servers.
    4. Support for interacting with clusters of servers.
    5. Administrative tools. We have some administrative functions already. This is referring to expanding on that and getting more of what you can do using the web-based WLS Console to be available directly in Eclipse.
  3. How stable and bug-free is your experience with WebLogic Server Tools? Would you rather see the next release be a service release or a feature release?

Let us know what you think by posting comments to this blog.

Sneak Peek into WebLogic Server Tools 1.1

Posted by kosta on September 22, 2007 at 9:28 AM | Permalink | Comments (2)

We are putting final touches on another release of WebLogic Server Tools for Eclipse (available early October) and I want to take a few minutes to give everyone a sneak peek into two new features that will be included in this release.

First, responding to numerous user requests, this release will allow WLS users to take advantage of Java EE 5 tools that are part of the Eclipse Web Tools Platform. Note that you will need version 10.0 of WLS since prior versions did not support Java EE 5.

The second feature is the support of WebLogic Server 10.3 Tech Preview, which is set to be available early October. Since 10.3 will not be out in final form when WLS Tools 1.1 ships, the support for 10.3 should be considered experimental, but if you are eager to try the new version of the server, this will give you a chance to do that using the tools that you are already familiar with.

This release will, of course, also include numerous bug fixes, so it will be worth upgrading even if you don't yet have any need for these new features. To see the open and fixed bugs, you can visit our publicly-accessible bug tracking system. Using the search tool, you can compose queries to find the information of interest. For instance, this query shows all bugs that have been fixed in 1.1 release. We are at 23 as of this writing.

Stay tuned. More updates to come.
