We have been busy building out new demos to demonstrate how WebLogic Portal can be a central part of your Web 2.0 initiatives.
The latest launch of wlp.bea.com shows the next generation of Web 2.0 functionality built on the latest release of WLP - WebLogic Portal 10.
See the hosted demos at the WLP Labs site by navigating to http://wlp.bea.com.
BEA and Web 2.0
The WLP team has been busy over the last few month finishing out the WLP 10 release, as well as spending countless hours planning for future releases of the product.
If there is one theme that applies to much of this work, it is Web 2.0.
BEA is investing heavily in Web 2.0 technologies.
WebLogic Portal is driving forward with a number of features that will power tomorrow's Web 2.0 initiatives in the enterprise.
WLP Labs shows what is possible today, as well as ideas for the future.
Also, BEA is investing in a trio of new Web 2.0 products called Pages, Ensemble and Pathways.
Whatever you need, BEA has a solution.
WLP Labs - instant gratification for Web 2.0
WebLogic Portal's Web 2.0 effort started last year with the launch of WLP Labs, which was a set of hosted demos on WLP 9.2.
The first demo showed our Dojo and Ajax powered user interface (called the Dynamic Visitor Tools, or DVT).
This highlighted how the ability to use drag and drop gestures to customize a Portal can
be a powerful approach for enterprise projects.
This was quickly followed by hosted demos of enterprise mashups with Google Gadgets
(see this webinar for more information).
This is market leading stuff - as proven by IBM distributing a press release
claiming to be "first" with this idea 6 months after we first demo'd it. Amusing.
WLP Labs - new and improved on WLP 10
As of last week, the site was overhauled with new demos built on WLP 10.
The WebLogic Portal 10 Playground is the latest iteration of demos showing the power of WLP.
While still a work in progress, you will be impressed with what it has to offer.
Like the hosted demos of last year, we have started with a demo of the DVT user interface.
It will be followed by many updates, including:
- Improved Blogging portlet
- Add the Google Gadget integration from the WLP 9.2 site
- Add the enterprise portlets from the WLP 9.2 site
Take a test drive today, and keep coming back as the site evolves.

Update March 3rd, 2008:
The Ajax features that were shown in prototype form on WLP 10 have now been built into the product as a sample for WLP 10.2. The WLP 10 site has been taken down, and wlp.bea.com now includes a link to the live 10.2 product.
Also, if you download WLP 10.2, you will find a sample domain already prepared:
Windows Start Menu -> BEA -> Examples -> WLP -> Start Server
and then hit:
http://localhost:7041/

Good question. We are about to relaunch the demo site on the next version of WLP. I will blog about it when I do, and I will be sure to put some more info on how its built.
In the meantime, the WLP 10 demo was built by creating a custom look and feel that integrated the Dojo Ajax library. We also implemented a set of REST services on top of the WLP server-side portal framework APIs. As you drag and drop portlets around, Ajax calls are made to those REST APIs to update the user's portal.
The next version of WLP, WLP 10.2, will contain all of this IN THE BOX. The REST APIs will be fully supported, and the dynamic user interface (called the Dynamic Visitor Tools) will be included.
