This is very common question for an Architect designing reference architecture for large organization while just stepping into the world of SOA. This confusion normally stems from over loaded terms like service orchestration, business orchestration, business process, system process and products that seem to have overlapping features. There is no single guide on how to design you architecture as it all depends on the solution context. But if you are designing SOA based solutions architecture and want to follow some sort of thumb rule on where you should you implement the orchestration. Here's a simple guide. (Please Note: You will need to change the approach based on your solution context) Assuming you are using WebLogic Integration, AquaLogic Service Bus and AquaLogic Business Process Management in you reference architecture use the following rule. 1. WLI will provide transactional system to system orchestration as system process to call backbend systems and services that are very specific to project. 2. ALSB will provide service orchestration over shared services or services that form part of shared services. 3. ALBPM product will provide business process orchestration which may involve calls to system process in WLI and shared services in ALSB.
