Security Advisories and Notifications

Subject: Security Advisory (BEA07-164.01)
From: BEA Systems Inc.
Minor Subject: Security policy may not be applied to WebLogic administration deployers when uploading archives
Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express

This security advisory (BEA07-164.01) contains updated information in Section II. This security advisory (BEA07-164.01) contains the corrected remedy for this vulnerability on WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 9.1 and 9.0. Please disregard security advisory BEA07-164.00, as this advisory, BEA07-164.01, supersedes it.

Threat level: Medium
An administration user acting in the Deployer role may not be restricted from uploading archives

Severity: High
A Deployer may be able to upload files containing malicious code.

A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server. A patch is available to correct this problem (see Section II). BEA Systems treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers' systems. As a result, BEA Systems strongly suggests the following actions:

I. Read the following advisory.
II. Apply the suggested action.
III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions included in this advisory.

I. Advisory

Administration Console users must be in one of four roles: Admin, Deployer, Operator, or Monitor. Users with Admin and Deployer roles are authorized to deploy applications. The deployment process in the WebLogic Console includes the ability to upload archives to the administrative server and to deploy these archives to the application servers configured in a WebLogic domain.

WebLogic security policies can be configured to restrict the file upload capability and limit Deployers to deploy and update applications from a pool of carefully vetted archives. The Administration Console was ignoring these Domain Security Policies and permitting any Admin or Deployer to upload files for deployment.

This advisory resolves this issue by updating the Administration Console so that domain security policies are explicitly examined before permitting file upload operations in the Install and Update assistants. This advisory only affects the Administration Console. Command line deployment tools, such as Deployer and WLST, are not affected by this issue.
