Security Advisories and Notifications

Subject: Security Advisory (BEA07-170.00)
From: BEA Systems Inc.
Minor Subject: Exposure of filenames in development mode
Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Workshop & WebLogic Integration

Threat level: Low
The WebLogic Workshop Test View may reveal parent directories to the WebLogic Workshop Directory (wlwdir)

Severity: Medium
An attacker may use the Test View Console to launch a directory traversal attack on the server.

A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Workshop/WebLogic Integration. A patch/upgrade is available to correct this problem (see Section II). BEA Systems treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers' systems. As a result, BEA Systems strongly suggests the following actions:

I. Read the following advisory.
II. Apply the suggested action.
III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions included in this advisory.

I. Advisory

The WebLogic Workshop Test View may reveal parent directory information to the WebLogic Workshop Directory (wlwdir) when the application is deployed in an exploded format in a development environment. The WebLogic Workshop Test View console should always be disabled in a production environment.

WebLogic Integration 9.2 is only susceptible if the application is deployed explicitly in an exploded form. By default, WebLogic Integration 9.2 does not use the exploded deployment model. In WebLogic Workshop 8.1, the exploded deployment model is the default.

This patch resolves this problem by preventing users from navigating beyond the corresponding web application directory.
