Minor Subject: JavaScript can be injected into the WLP Groupspace application and can allow for an XSS exploit

Using certain Groupspace functions, an attacker might be able enter JavaScript commands in the Groupspace application.

Severity: Medium
An attacker may be able to force the attacker’s JavaScript to execute with elevated privileges in a WLP Groupspace instance.

A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Portal. Upgrades are available to correct this problem (see Section II). BEA Systems treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers’ systems. As a result, BEA Systems strongly suggests the following actions:

I. Advisory

It may be possible for a WLP Groupspace user to enter malicious JavaScript in certain functions of the Groupspace application. This action may render certain buttons dysfunctional and is also a potential cross site scripting vulnerability.

This advisory corrects this issue by always preventing the execution of any entered JavaScript and keeps all functions working correctly.

The following versions of WebLogic Portal are affected by this vulnerability

  • WebLogic Portal 10.0, on all platforms
  • WebLogic Portal 9.2 released through Maintenance Pack 1, on all platforms

BEA Systems strongly recommends the following course of actions.

WebLogic Portal 10.0

    Upgrade to WebLogic Portal 10.0 Maintenance Pack 1

WebLogic Portal 9.2

    Upgrade to WebLogic Portal 9.2 Maintenance Pack 2
