How to Build Your Own Temple of Ego in Five Minutes: Last night I discovered a very simple solution to a rather complex problem: how to track someone's online presence without having to visit all their web sites and without using Google Alerts. Read on for the full scoop.

Running ALI on SQL Server 2005 Express: Yes, it's totally possible, although there are a few gotchas. This article is a step-by-step HOWTO on getting ALI working on MS SQL Server 2005 Express (which is free).

Enterprise Web 2.0 (0 of 6): Back in November of 2007 I gave a one-hour talk in Tyson's Corner, VA entitled "The Enterprise Relevance of Web 2.0." There were probably about thirty people in attendance. Since then, I've had several people tell me that they were sorry they missed the talk, etc. If you missed it, these next six posts are for you.

Write an ALUI IDS in Under 15 Lines Using Ruby on Rails: Not only is it possible to write an ALUI Identity Service in Ruby on Rails, it's remarkably easy. I was able to do the entire authentication part in fewer than 15 lines of code! However, I ran into problems on the synchronization side and ended up writing that part in Java. Read on for all the gory details.

One Portal to Rule Them All: I won't rehash what's already been said by everyone in the press and the blogosphere -- Oracle is buying BEA. I wrote almost three years ago that this was inevitable, and now it's upon us. I'm hopeful that the BEA/Oracle management crew can take what they learned from the Plumtree, Fuego and Flashline (for BEA) and Siebel, PeopleSoft and Oblix (for Oracle) acquisitions and apply it to the challenges their own merger presents.

Getting Social at BEA Participate 2008: This week BEA launched the Participate 2008 blog and revealed more about their plans for what is shaping up to be a great event. Perhaps the most exciting news is that BEA will be using the conference to unveil a suite of social applications running on a soon-to-be-released version of ALI 6.5 and coded by the developers here at bdg.

Predictions: Will Oracle Acquire BEA?: If this Oracle/BEA deal goes down, I have to gloat a least just a little bit because I called it out on my blog in August of 2005 in response to the BEA/Plumtree acquisition.

Live from BEA Participate: Mark Carges Keynote: Here is the first article in what will hopefully be a series of live updates from BEA's premier gathering of ALUI and ALBPM experts, customers and partners: BEA Participate. The conference began yesterday evening with a short social event in the partner pavilion. It opened this morning with an excellent keynote by BID chief Mark Carges, which I describe here.

Bringing Web 2.0 to the en.terpri.se: BEA's prescient BID folks, the ex-Plumtreevians and ex-Fuegoistas who brought you some of the core products behind AquaLogic, have done it again. This week, they released their newest marketing manifesto -- http://en.terpri.se -- which sets the tone beautifully for the future of enterprise computing.

Four ALUI IDKs at Your Disposal -- Fifth One On the Way?: This post points out a truth that many of you already know to be self-evident: that you can build ALUI portlets in Java, .NET, Ruby or PHP. It also talks a bit about how you could go about building a portlet without an IDK.

Portals and SOA: Portals in a Service-Oriented Architecture: I've been invited to give the following talk at BEA Participate: Why is a Service-Oriented Architecture important to an IT infrastructure and what are the elements and products needed to build out an SOA? These questions answered, plus a discussion on how portals are the practical starting point to leveraging SOA.

BEA Participate: Without a whole lot of fanfare -- or really any fanfare at all -- BEA "announced" an ALUI and ALBPM user conference called "BEA Participate" scheduled for May 6th through May 9th in Atlanta.

WLP + Adrenaline = ALUI?: The WLP team is all excited about a new feature called Adrenaline that achieves complete feature parity between WLP and AquaLogic Interaction . . . circa 1998. But wait, ALI didn't exist in 1998. You're right -- but remember this little company called Plumtree, which, in 1998, had 25 employees. Do you know how I know that? Because I was employee #26. Intrigued? Read on . . . .

How to Integrate PKI Certs or CAC Cards with ALUI: Ever wondered how you can log into the Plumtree/ALUI portal using a soft cert (e.g. PKI) or a CAC card or secure id? The answer is that it's a lot easier than you think. This post describes how to implement the ISSOIntegration interface to work with certs, biometrics or any other form of authentication without having to buy an expensive identity management package like Netegrity's SiteMinder or Oracle's Oblix.

Announcing the Ruby IDK: What's the newest project on code share? What's the hottest new ALUI integration kit out there? What's black, white, and Ruby-red all over? What's with all the questions? You guessed it, the Ruby IDK has arrived.

UUID Object Opener, The Coolest ALUI TagLib Yet: We've all been burned by the changing ObjectID problem as you move from Dev to Test to Production. In the pre G6-days, I came up with a clunky solution for this involving using Admin Settings and a lot of manual configuration. Now, with a very cool new ALUI taglib, you can open objects using only a UUID, which stays constant from environment to environment, even from one portal to another! Gotta love those taglibs . . . .

My Love Affair With ALUI TagLibs: I just can't get enough of ALUI taglibs. They're the best thing BEA/Plumtree has done in the past year or so -- even better than making Community Pages real IPT Objects. Here's another taglib that I wrote to get the help URL from a web service (in case you disabled the title bar). Enjoy!

Searching Intrinsic Properties (.NET): Two posts ago, I described an IDK (EDK) patch that allows you to search intrinsic properties with the PRC. However, I neglected to include C#.NET sample code -- sorry! This post includes the .NET IDK fix.

A Slick Alternative to pt:standard.openerlink: Even though they're really easy to use and they meet the needs of many, there are a few people out there who are not entirely satisfied with pt:standard.openerlink style selectors for portal objects. Here's an alternative tag lib that works well for selecting from a small nested hierarchy of communities. It can be adapted to work for other types of object hierarchies as well.

Searching Intrinsic ALUI Properties Using the PRC: Up until now, it's been impossible to search on intrinsic properties (with IDs < 100) using the PRC. This quick patch to the IDK allows you to get around this annoying limitation.

This post describes the issues I encountered and how I worked around them, which could potentially help people get ALUI up-and-running on FC5 as well as other officially unsupported flavors of *nix. YMMV.

Caveat Emptor: Using Varpacks in Pluggable Navigation: Because of the order in which custom varpacks and pluggable navigations are loaded, you can't use varpacks in the constructors of your pluggable navigation views. You can still use them, as long as you call them on the fly from your IView:Display method.

Hello World + Portlet vs. Native Navigation: This first post is a short introduction to my new dev2dev blog, a bit about the types of posts you can expect to find here and my first topic -- whether to choose native or portlet-based navigation (or a hybrid of the two) and how the different types of navigation work. I plan to take you well beyond the "hello world" examples offered in the documentation. So, hello world and here we go!
