WebLogic Server Virtual Edition Launcher Appliance

Overview

The WLS-VE launcher appliance simplifies the process of installing, configuring, and evaluating BEA WebLogic Server Virtual Edition™ (WLS-VE) 9.2 V1.0.

WLS-VE is a combination of a Java application server (BEA WebLogic Server) with a Java Virtual Machine (BEA LiquidVM) that works with hypervisor software and provides only the set of operating system features that WebLogic Server needs to offer its full range of services. The WLS-VE launcher appliance is both an NFS server and a launcher machine that is preconfigured to start a sample WLS-VE domain on an ESX Server. It also contains a copy of the WLS-VE ISO image file, which is the boot image that ESX Server uses to start instances of the WLS-VE virtual machines.

Benefits of WLS-VE

BEA WebLogic Server Virtual Edition, a middleware software appliance containing BEA WebLogic Server Premium with LiquidVM, delivers a ready-to-run platform for enterprise Java applications optimized out of the box for VMware ESX Server. Because BEA LiquidVM can run on hypervisor-enabled x86 servers without a standard OS, it dramatically reduces memory consumption, optimizing data center computing resources.

In summary, BEA WebLogic Server Virtual Edition offers the following benefits:

Simplicity: preconfigured software appliances

  • Fully integrated stack removes installation and configuration challenges
  • Rapid provisioning and deployment of new instances on resource pool
  • Elimination of the operating system also means fewer points of failure and heightened application security

Efficiency: cost reduction through virtualization and consolidation

  • Higher utilization: less hardware to support the same number of applications
  • No OS license or maintenance costs; greatly reduced administration and overhead costs
  • Reduced data center complexity and operating costs

About VMware

VMware technology delivers enterprise datacenter solutions that enable customers to simplify IT infrastructure and drive down their total cost of ownership. VMware enables multiple operating systems, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Novell Netware or Microsoft Windows and enterprise datacenter applications such as WebLogic Platform to run simultaneously on the same hardware. By decoupling the current 1:1 ratio between the os/application stack and hardware to allow multiple os/application instances on a single piece of hardware, VMware drives down cost and increases efficiency of hardware and with this presents a wide host of solutions such as business continuity, disaster recovery, robust system management, rapid provisioning, and extremely efficient development and test environments.

Benefits of Virtualization

Let's look at some of the benefits of virtualization:

  • A virtual infrastructure simplifies your computing infrastructure, reducing the cost and complexity of delivering enterprise services.
  • Run multiple operating systems and applications on one server. Resource allocations are no longer a problem and your hardware is maximized..
  • Your operating system is no longer tied to the hardware, so moving your test environment from one server to another is a snap..
  • Provision entire environments instantly - IT no longer has to wait for hardware to become available, clean and re-provision hardware, and then match the exact test environment in order to create a QA environment. With VMware, just load up golden master VMs and your QA environment is ready to go..
  • Purely consistent environment - since developers can work off on one master virtual environment, development environments are consistent and easy to maintain.
